Sometimes it is important to put things simply.  The internet and web design can be complicated, especially for people who did not grow up with the technology that is currently dominating our culture.  Here is a very simple explanation to help you get through the tangled web of SEO:

All major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing list websites based on what they (the search engines) consider to be most relevant to users.  There are ways to ensure that your website shows up as one of the search results.  This method is called Search Engine Optimization.

The Run Down (SEO in it’s simplest form):

Your content must be in HTML text format in order for it to show up or be listed in search engines.  Therefore, if you want your website to be listed on any search engine, the easiest way is to write at least some of your website’s content in HTML.

Keyword Usage and Targeting:

Keywords are the most important factor in Search Engine Optimization.  The entire basis of search engines are built on keywords.  We as consumers use keywords to find certain websites on Google, and so it is important for your website’s keywords to be in sync with what internet users are looking for, and with the services you are offering. For example, if you are a dog grooming service, you’re going to want to make sure that in your HTML coding, and even in the rich text content, you include keyword terms like “dog”, “grooming”, “dog grooming”, “dog bath”, “dog grooming New York”, “dog grooming Brooklyn”, “dog maintenance”, “dog shampooing”, and so on.  Get it?  Many blogs allow you to add keywords by providing you with a text box called “Tags”.  You can add you keywords, which must be separated by commas, in order to work correctly.

This is the simplest way to get your website to show up on the first page of major search engines.  The trick is to have the most poignant keywords to attract what users are looking for.  There are obviously thousands of dog grooming shops in New York and Brooklyn, and not to mention you’re going to be competing with large companies like Petco and PetSmart.

You can either get very creative with your keywords in your HTML coding, or you can hire an SEO specialist to do it for you.  There are several companies like iGenii Inc. who promise to show top search engine listing results.

Search Engine Optimization doesn’t have to be complicated.  Even if it is, there are ways to look at it that will help you understand how to create a keyword friendly website.  You probably won’t get your site to show up on the first page of google if you offer a relatively popular service, but you can understand why other sites are ranking better than you are.
